Llano Master Gardeners Board Meeting
Thursday, January 11, 2007; 9:00 a.m
Acme Restaurant, Llano
7 members, 1 guest

The executive board met at the Acme Restaurant in Llano to discuss organizing the Plant and Garden Show and the spring training class.   While waiting for all the members to join the group, Sandy Shaw, president, passed out three information sheets to be looked over.

After the group gathered and their orders given for a Dutch treat lunch, Sandy asked the members to refer to the sheet titled “Llano Master Gardener Training”.   She informed the group the library was confirmed as the meeting location.   She also informed the group that seven of the speakers had confirmed at present and one was almost a confirmation.   There were two open slots on the class schedule.   She added that accommodations were available if any of the speakers had to spend the night.   She informed the group that 15 students had paid and have been placed in the class.   She also told the group that the book cost $43.00 and can be in Llano in less than a week after ordering.

The business then turned to getting publicity out about the class.   Julie Woodall passed out colorful flyers with the class information to be posted in businesses.   She asked the members to each take a few and post.   It was decided that an article be posted in the paper for the next week.   Lillie Baker said she would put an article in The Mason News.   It was also decided to use the marquee on the Square and free radio public service announcements as means of recruiting more students.

Sandy asked the members of the group to be prepared to serve as hosts for one or two classes.   The host would make sure the refreshments were on site, the guests were met and introduced, the site set up and cleaned up.   She said there would be sign up sheet at one of the meetings for all the members to sign up.   She said the refreshments should be simple such as coffee cake, cookies, fruit bread and coffee and water.   If any of the students wanted to bring their lunch that would be permitted by the library.

The attention of the group then turned to the class schedule.   Two classes were still open.   Dwight Bonner informed the group he would locate a presenter for the herbs class from the Austin Botanical group that he was a member.   Several suggestions were given for the other open class date including a series of short presentations by three or four different presenters on a variety of topics.   No final decision was made by the executive board.

The attention then turned to the Lawn and Garden Show to be held Saturday, March 10 at the American Legion Hall in Llano.   Sandy Shaw expressed her desire to find someone to chair the show even though everyone would help.   She said a lot of the work had already been done such as reserving the American Legion Hall and the Chamber sign on the courthouse square as well as locating and confirming the presenters.   The chair would be responsible for communication with the vendors, helping the vendors set up, break down or find someone to work their booth as well as plan the set up day on the Friday before the show.   Sandy Shaw and Julia Woodall would go to Hasse’s store and talk to IdaNell Schuessler about the vendor list used in 2006 immediately after lunch.

Julie Woodall told the group that some of the presenters wanted to be assigned a topic to speak on.   Several topics were suggested such a topiary and/or bonsai trimming, critter control and antique roses.

The topic of food was next on agenda.   Tejas Taco’s breakfast taco wagon was suggested. Sandy Shaw also said publicity needed to be planned.   It was suggested flyers and newspaper articles be used.   She informed the group that the sign at highway 16 in front of the American Legion Hall would be used.

She also said a plant chairman to select the herbs and order the plants was needed.   Doris Ellis was suggested to be the chair but she was not at the meeting to confirm her willingness to perform the job.

The board meeting adjourned at 1:15 after everyone paid for their own lunch.

Respectfully submitted by;

Lillie Baker, Secretary
