Llano Master Gardeners Board Meeting
Tuesday, October 16, 2007; 9:00 a.m
Berry Street Bakery, Llano
With all board members present, Sandy Shaw started the meeting by discussing the booth on the court house lawn Saturday at the Heritage Day Festival. She showed the schedule of workers and said she would ask for more workers at the regular meeting on Thursday. The members who had said they would work whenever needed were placed on the schedule. She said she was going to Gabriel Valley Farms on Friday, October 19, to pick up the flats of plants. The plants cost the association 99 cents per 3 inch pot and would be sold for $2.00 each. She had a list of the plants to pick from. She stated the Franks would help set up the booth at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. It would be the first time the new tent would be used. Sandy also stated a sign up sheet for the next class would be available for people wanting to take the next training class, as well as the small book published by LCRA would be for sale for $2.00.
Sandy then told about pulling up the plants at the library because the plants were sun loving plants that had been planted in the shade. While at the meeting, she received a call from Cecilia Griffin who asked if the group would want some blue plumbago for the library since her nursery provider was bringing some. The group present stated they would be perfect for the library.
Sandy also informed the group the Pioneer Park was almost complete. She also said the cost of the plants were greater than the group was lead to believe when the Main Street Committee and the City of Llano approached the Master Gardeners about creating the park.
The discussion then turned to the November meeting. There is no presenter scheduled, it was decided to have the current officers state what responsibilities each position require, Norm Millen would give a power point presentation on the projects in progress, and election would be held.
The board examined the calendar and selected March 8th for the Llano Lawn and Garden Show. Audrey and Norm Millen agreed to co-chair the event. Sandy Shaw said there were very good records of past events that could be used. It was decided to call the vendors instead of sending a written invitation to participate due to the cost of postage. Julia Woodall and Sandy Shaw agreed to help with recruiting vendors.
While setting the date for the Lawn and Garden Show, the next training class was discussed. It was decided to have a class in Llano in spring 2008, beginning March 12 and ending May 14. Johnny Sawyer, Dwight Bonner and Sandy Shaw agreed to co-chair the training class committee. The board decided the minimum number of students would be 15 and the maximum number would be 30. Also the use of the cheaper notebook (at $40.00 vs. $70.00) was discussed, but the group decided they would have to see both books side by side to make that decision and since Todd Swift, County Agent, favored the $70.00 notebook, it may be best to use it.
A large part of the meeting was used to discuss possible candidates for election in November. Several names were suggested for each position. Norm Millen, chair of the nominating committee, said he would contact the persons and determine before the regular meeting who was willing to take the office. The positions that needed to be filled were president, vice-president, secretary, public relations chair, and speakers chair. The webmaster, timekeeper and newsletter editor were first put on the list but the board decided to remove them because they had special skills connected to them. It would be better for someone with an interest and with the skills to volunteer to take on one of those positions.
The last item of business was to discuss the amount of dues that would be fair. Dues are the main source of revenue for the Master Gardeners. The board decided since many of the members were couples, to charge couples $25.00 a year and single members $15.00 a year. This decision was reached after several amounts were suggested. Dwight Bonner, treasurer, pointed out the Llano Master Gardeners was a non-profit association and could not have a lot of money in the bank.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
