Llano Master Gardeners Board Meeting
Wednesday, November 14, 2007; 9:00 a.m.
Berry Street Bakery, Llano
The Board of the LMGA met Wednesday, November 14, on the front porch of the Berry Street Bakery. The incoming board members met with the present board.
Sandy Shaw, president, welcomed everyone, then opened the meeting with plans for the dedication/meeting at the Pioneer Park. She stated she would be there at 4:30 p.m. to set up tables and chairs and anyone willing to help could come. She asked everyone to bring a dip or snack or wine. The LMG would provide forks, spoons, plates, napkins, ice, soft drinks and water. Lisa Miller, webmaster, was asked to bring her camera and take pictures. She stated the dedication has started as a small idea but had grown by word of mouth to include the Mayor, some of Mainstreet board members, members of the chamber of commerce, extension office people and friends of the LMG members. Norm Millen volunteered to visit with George Hye from the Llano Journal newspaper to cover the dedication of the park. Sandy expressed her appreciation to all the workers who made Pioneer Park possible.
The discussion turned to the Library Project. It was decided to focus on the garden. A committee was needed to design a shade tolerant flowerbed. Timi DeBusk, co-chair of the Program Committee, said she would help design the flowerbed. She also stated she could buy hostas wholesale for the flowerbed if they decided to use them.
It was stated the biggest expense of the LMGA was mulch. Timi DeBusk stated she could get it by the pallet wholesale for the association if there was a place that was secure and accessible to store it. Storage of the mulch became the topic, naming and rejecting several locations. No action was taken.
Sandy passed out a copy of the re-written by-laws provided by Dwight Bonner. She suggested the by laws be part of the LMG website. She asked everyone to look it over before the next meeting and any deletions, additions or revisions would be made. Norm Millen suggested a change to Article 13-Expenditures of Association Funds be made to lower the $500 to $100. Rewording on that was suggested by several members until an acceptable statement was created. Vivian Horlen, from the Extension Office will retype it. Sandy reminded the members that only certified members would vote on the bylaws.
The next item of business was Spring Training for the Master Gardeners. Several of the board members stated they have had inquiries concerning the next class. It was decided to keep enrollment between 15 and 30 students. The date of the first class has not been set but it should be the week or two after the Lawn and Garden Show in March. Sandy Shaw stated Dale Groom had called and wanted to instruct a class for the new class. It was suggested Dave Franks put an article in the paper before Christmas about the class and suggest attendance to the class be given as Christmas gift.
The Lawn and Garden Show on March 8th, 2008 was the next item of business. Norm and Audrey Millen are chairing the event. Sandy Shaw and Julia Woodall, co-chairs in 2007, have turned their files over to them. Sandy stated the American Legion Hall will be available Friday night for set-up and Saturday for the show. It was stated that speakers that have presented at least twice should not present again. Also suggested was a raffle of something. The raffle could be used as a fund raiser for the association, particularly if the item was donated. Tickets could be sold a week or so in advance of the Lawn and Garden Show, the winner be drawn at the L&G Show but would not have to be present to win.
From the topic of a raffle, the topic moved to MG tee shirts. Some of the members wanted a t-shirt. Sandy explained that Terri’s T’s in Burnet has the cut template of the front of the t-shirt. She also explained that it cost $30.00 every time a new template was added. She told the new board members that the t-shirts had cost $8.00 but LMG sold them for $10.00 to cover the cost of the template. Some of the members stated they thought the design on the front would look better if it was on the back of the t-shirt and the letters LMG or something small be placed on the left side of the front. Some members felt the rubberized design was hot. It was suggested to check the price of t-shirts with the MG logo on them with Hill Country Embroidery. Sandy said she would do that when the meeting was over.
The slate of new officers was submitted. Sandy stated again that only certified members could vote. To win, the candidate needed 2/3 votes of the certified members present and voting. The slate included: President-Norm Millen, Vice-President-Audrey Millen, Secretary-Roy Petty, Treasurer-Dwight Bonner, Timekeeper of hours-Lillie Baker, Publicity-Dave Franks, Webmaster-Lisa Miller, Project Coordinator-Sandy Shaw, Historian-Julie Woodall, Program Co-Chairs-Timi DeBusk, Eva Whipple.
Sandy Shaw informed the group that Thursday, November 29, from 4 to 6 there would be a come and go reception for Jamie Osbourn at the Extension office. Jamie is the new County Agent in Llano County.
The December meeting/dinner at Sandy Shaw’s house on Thursday, December 13, at 6:30 p.m. was the last item of business to be discussed. The entrée, water, tea, and coffee would be provided. The members should bring a dessert, salad, side dish or bread and a drink of choice. It was suggested to bring a $10 plant or plant related item to be used as a gift in the White Elephant or Chinese Exchange. She had s sign up sheet for members. She stated she had invited Todd Swift and his wife, Jamie Osbourn and his wife, Vivian Horlen and Marilyn Hale from the Extension Office. Sandy was concerned that her house would be too small if bad weather set in.
She also informed the assembled, Mike Reagor, Natural Resource Conservation Service, was retiring after 33 years. Friday, December 14, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. a come and go reception at The Dabb’s Railroad Hotel would be held in his honor.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
