Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, January 12; 5:30 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
8 members, 3 guests
The regular meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners began with the passing out of certificates to the members who have completed all their requirements to become a certified Master Gardener. Sandy Shaw showed a hand book for Master Gardeners that she had received from Todd Swift. She explained that there were several avenues we could take as to how these members could organize and still remain viable. After a short explanation of where the group was in the decision making process, a vote was taken to remain an independent loosely organized group and evolve as we grew in knowledge, membership and resources.
The group decided to keep the name Llano Master Gardeners and keep the title “President” with Sandy Shaw holding that office, “Secretary” with Lillie Baker holding that office, and Julie Woodall would continue as program chair. A member not present, Sylvia Casselman, had indicated she would like to be the treasurer and it was agreed the position would be offered to her. As an independent group, the Llano Master Gardeners would continue to share work at the Burnet’s Farmers’ Market and education opportunities.
A reminder was given the group that the deadline for signing up for the new class was February 10 and the first day of class would be March 23. As of the date of the meeting seven people had signed up to attend the class. A reminder was also issued to sign up if we were attending the Junior Master Gardener workshop on January 19. Doris Ellis and Julia Woodall graciously agreed to provide the refreshments for the workshop.
It was also announced that Marilyn Hale needed a speaker on container gardening but more details would be forthcoming.
Yearly dues of $25.00 are due this month but would be accepted until March 1. There was some discussion as to when the cycle for dues and volunteer/education hours should begin and end. It was decided to cycle the dues from January to January since new students in Master Gardener classes would be collected at that time. Since the majority of the graduates of the classes would not begin their volunteer hours until after the classes in May, that volunteer/education hours cycle should be from May to May. This allows those that finished their class in May, 2005 to get their volunteer hours by May, 2006. Most of the graduating May, 2005 class have received their certification. The group was reminded to continue reporting volunteer and education hours to Lillie Baker. Once a member is certified or the second year, six hours of volunteer hours and six hours of education hours a year is required to remain certified. Education hours are earned from meetings when a presenter gives a demonstration or education lecture.
The discussion turned to the Lawn and Garden Show to be held March 11 in Llano. The Chair, IdaNell Schuessler, asked those wanting to help with the event meet with her on January 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the County Extension Office.
A short report was given on the Christmas party with Burnet County. Very few members attended, the certificates were given to those who did attend but the certificates had misspelled words and were reissued at this meeting, and the food was very good.
The last item on the agenda was a discussion of the ongoing projects. All of the projects are continuing but the work has been reduced due to the time of year. However, the volunteers for the hospital were facing the dilemma of erecting a plaque in honor of local nurseries that gave plants or other materials in the area. The plaque was promised by a member who is no longer active and the question was how would the plaque be paid.
The meeting adjourned at 6:27 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
