Monthly Meeting Minutes

March 2007

Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, March 16; 5:00 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
6 members, 3 guests

Sandy Shaw began the meeting by giving a financial report of the Lawn and Garden Show.   After expenses the LMGers netted $408.65.   She informed the assembled that she had sent thank you notes to the vendors for participating in the event.   The vendors indicated they had done well.

She also informed the group that pictures of the Lawn and Garden Show would be in next weeks The Buzz newspaper.

Suggestions to make the Lawn and Garden Show better were discussed.   They were:

  1.   Add crafts
  2.   Talk to the vendors after sending a letter
  3.   Do not send a stamped addressed envelope to the vendors to respond
  4.   Use the radio station for ads and promote the event
  5.   Do the food concession
  6.   Volunteer to man the booths of those who didn’t have enough
store employees to attend the L&G show

The positive things about the event were the speakers were all good, the attendees were interested, the vendors did well, and good will was plentiful.

Judy Hodges brought her gourd wreath.   It was made with 75miniature gourds.   She had attached the gourds to a straw wreath.   She told the group she had dyed the gourds with brown leather stain.   She had attached baby breath to between the gourds.   She also had a gourd she had had cut to look like a jack-o-lantern.   She explained she had used a special small saw to make the cuts.   Then she explained how she cleaned the gourd and painted it.   She shared some of her magazines/catalogues on gourding with the group.

Sandy Shaw told the group about a prickly pear pad wreath she had bought and was using as a pattern to make more wreaths.   She suggested the group may want to make wreaths to sell at Heritage Day in October.

Sandy Shaw also informed the assembled that she had 750 small trees in her pickup.   They were from the Forestry Service and had come to Todd Swift at the County Extension office.   They were due before the Lawn and Garden Show but had failed to arrive in time.   All the members were encouraged to take some of the trees home to plant.   The trees were pecan, Mexican White Oak and Burr Oak.   Suggestions were sought as how to use the remaining trees.   Ida Nell Schuessler said she had spoken to Sarah Franklin about the Historical Society Committee using them in the Downtown project.

Sandy Shaw informed the group she would be talking to the new students in the Master Gardener class beginning March 23.   She said they may need a host for one of the classes.   The host would be responsible for getting the refreshments for the class.   Several people volunteered.

The discussion turned to future projects for members to consider.   The Historical Museum and the Jail were both suggested as locations that are often visited and both locations were in need of beautification.

Then the discussion covered future speakers for the monthly meeting of the LMGers.   Several people were suggested.   The question was asked if the meetings should continue through the hot summer and it was felt that if meetings stopped, the momentum would stop and it would be difficult to start meeting again later in the year.

Lillie Baker, Secretary
