Thursday, May 18; 5:30 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
12 members, 1 guest
Lee Winkler, presenter
On May 18 at 5:30 p.m. the Llano Master Gardeners gathered at the Llano Extension Office for the regular monthly meeting. While waiting for all the members to arrive, they enjoyed the chocolate cake and coffee provided by Sandy Shaw.
Lee Winkler, from Highland Lakes Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas, presented a slide show of local, easy to grow native plants. The members asked specific questions about different plants such as transplanting techniques, light requirements, etc.
Lee was very knowledgeable about the plants and gave excellent answers. Her presentation lasted about 50 minutes. She had 49 slides of 30 different plants.
After the presentation, Sandy Shaw, introduced the new members from the 2006 class. They were Jack Berger, Carolyn Lange, Dwight Bonner and Lynn Barrera. Katherine McFarland was a guest, not having taken the class.
Lillie Baker did not have the minutes with her so they were not read. It was suggested they be put on line to be read later. Lillie thought she could do this.
Sandy Shaw gave the treasurer report stating there was no activity on the account and the balance was $1,064.60.
Projects for earning Community Volunteer Hours were discussed with the group. The History Museum and “Old Red Top,” the old jail were suggested. The on-going projects, the Llano Hospital Courtyard and the Culture Club, were suggested also.
Another opportunity to earn hours will happen on October 21 at Heritage Festival. The LMGers will have a booth and will need workers to set up, work and break down. This booth will provide money for the club, hours for the individuals, as well as exposure of the organization.
Tee-shirts were brought up by Sandy Shaw. The reaction from the members was very cool. Terry’s Tees in Marble Falls was suggested as one place to check on quality and prices.
The president reminded the group about the June 15th meeting at Linda O’Nan’s place where she will speak on “Water Gardens.” The meeting will be held in the morning at 10:30 due to the Water Lilies not being open in the late afternoon. She explained about the parking problem and told the group we would car pool but no details were given about where to meet or the time.
Sandy Shaw told the group that a list was being created and each member would be given a month to provide refreshments. Lillie Baker will provide them at July meeting since Linda Onan is providing refreshments at her place.
The last item to be discussed was left undecided. The question of a meeting/party in December (December 21) to give certificates to the 2006 class who have earned certification or do it in January. There was a mixed reaction. Some people felt December was very busy and would not be able to attend while others felt the 2006 class would go to Burnet to get their certificates in December instead of waiting to be presented them in January. The group was instructed to think about this and it would be discussed again closer to December.
The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
