The regular meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners was held Thursday, July 20 at the Extension Office. Refreshments of ice cream and all the trimmings were provided by Lillie Baker and Judy Hodges provided cookies and lemonade. Before the meeting, the members and guest enjoyed refreshments while looking at plants and planters on display by the presenter.
The meeting began when President Sandy Shaw introduced the presenter, Timi DeBusk of TLC Nursery in Tow. Timi gave a very informative and interesting presentation of container gardening. She identified plants that made good container plants, discussed soil, dillo dirt and plant food. She shared her recipe for plant food. She demonstrated how to use moss to line a container. She defined a pot as anything with holes that holds dirt. She emphasized the use of discarded items as planters. She informed the group about a workshop she was having at her nursery on August 12 on making pots. After the presentation, she sold many of her plants and containers to the members.
The business section of the meeting took place after members bought plants and helped Timi DeBusk load her truck with her items.
Dwight Bonner gave the financial report stating there was $1039.60 in the bank. A $25.00 check had been written to Llano Main Street for the booth in the Heritage Fair in October. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with since they are to be posted on the Llano County Extension website.
Sandy Shaw announced the LMGers would be participating in the Heritage Fair in October. The group would be selling herbs and giving advice on plants. Doris Ellis has agreed to chair the selection and purchase of the herbs that will be sold.
Eva Whipple informed the group she had attended a workshop on oak wilt presented by the Burnet Extension office. She found the workshop very informative and suggested this organization get the presenter as a speaker.
Sandy Shaw told the group the Tee shirts would be available at the August meeting. They are buff in color with the same motif as HLMGers’ except they would say Llano County on the front and would not have “Dig it” on the back.
The president informed the assembled that the Llano Lawn and Garden Show would be March 10. Members should be thinking about speakers for the event.
A large portion of the meeting was used to discuss opportunities to earn community hours. There are three major projects available for members to participate. The old jail, Red Top,” needs its grounds beautified before October. The members who wish to earn
their hours working on that project will need to meet, draw a plan and give a presentation to the city. The second project is the area behind the History Museum. Members interested in that project need to present their plan to Patsy Parker. The third project is the Pocket Garden between the bridge and the Museum. The group in charge of that project is Main Street Project, Sarah Franklin.
Sandy Shaw informed the gathered a Publicity Chair position still needed to be filled. This person would write the news articles for the newspapers. No one volunteered.
Before adjourning, the group was informed the August 17th meeting would be held at the Extension office at 5:30 p.m. Jeff Durst from The Greenhouse in Mason would give the presentation. On September 21st Ray Buchanan would give a presentation, Gardening in Japan.
