Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, November 16; 4:00 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
Home of Eva Whipple
300 River Park Drive, Llano
James B. Briggs, presenter
The monthly meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners was held Thursday, November 16, at the beautiful home of Eva Whipple. After inspecting her lovely gardens and pond, the group snacked on coffee and crackers with spread under a huge oak tree.
After everyone gathered, James B. Briggs, an oak wilt specialist from Lampasas, gave the presentation on oak wilt. He passed around pictures and leaves from trees with oak wilt so each member could identify the disease. He explained how oak wilt was spread, which trees were subject to infection and how to combat the disease. He had handouts for each member on the subject. After the presentation and a question and answer session, the group moved to a tree that had been prepared for treatment to prevent oak wilt. At the tree, Mr. Briggs preceded to treat the tree by drilling small holes into the roots and injecting Alamo mixed with water into the tree. The tree would receive the injection all night, but he explained the next steps which were watering the roots through the injections and then watering the ground around the tree and replacing the dirt. There was another question and answer session, the group moved into the house for a business meeting.
Again Sandy Shaw reminded the members that the minutes could be read on line. Dwight Bonner gave his treasurer report.
Sandy Shaw, president, updated the members on the Pocket Park. She said at the last Design Meeting there were three high school students who wanted to draw a mural on the side of the museum. They wanted to do this project as part of their Leadership credit. The mural would show the history of Llano county. Sandy also stated the sidewalk should be started this month. The Master Gardeners wanted to put the trees in the ground as soon as possible after amending the soil. She also said Ms. Crabtree was interested in donating a fountain. Some discussion was held about the fountain vs. a pond. Sandy Shaw said she had offered some rocks from a rock fence on her property for the rock wall.
It was reported that the booth at Heritage Day was a success. The booth made $317 selling herbs and plants. After paying for the plants the association made $222 in profit. Many of the members worked the booth that Saturday, October 21.
Julie Woodall gave a report on the propagation class at Cherokee Nursery owned by Mary White. She had pictures to share of the event. Seven members attended her class. They were rewarded with cuttings from the plants after the class.
Sandy Shaw informed the group that Judy Hodges had moved to Pflugerville, Texas. She will be missed by the members.
Sandy also announced there would be a board meeting of Johnny Sawyer, Lillie Baker, Todd Swift and Sandy Shaw and anyone else who was interested in attending on Friday, November 17 at 11:30 at the Acme. The purpose of the board meeting will be to make some decisions about the spring Master Gardener certification class. Items to discuss would include time and dates, when the library would be available and speakers. Several people indicated interest in attending.
Todd Swift told the group about the Llano County Pecan Show on November 30. He asked for volunteers to crack and shell entries on November 29 at 3:00 at the Extension Office. The volunteers would prepare the nuts for judging.
Sandy Shaw shared with the members information she had about an organic farmer in Mason County. She shared the e-mail address with those interested in purchasing organic produce. (aprode@ctesc.net).
