Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, January 25; 6:00 p.m.
Home of Sandy Shaw, president
11 members, 3 guests

The January meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners was held in the lovely home of president Sandy Shaw beginning at 6:00 p.m. on January 25.   There were 11 members and three guests present for the meeting/social.   Sandy and Tom Shaw provided the drinks and meat dish of chicken and sausage and each member brought a vegetable or dessert dish.   Everyone enjoyed visiting while waiting for all the guests to arrive.   After all the guest had arrived, Norm Millen led the prayer before everyone sat down to enjoy a delicious meal and more visiting.

After everyone had finished eating, the members gathered in the living room and Sandy Shaw, president presided over the business meeting.   The first item of business was to present the new intern members with new name tags and their certificates as Master Gardeners.   The newly certified members are Audrey and Norm Millen and Dwight Bonner. The newly elected officers were recognized: President, Sandy Shaw; Vice President, Julia Woodall; Secretary, Lillie Baker; Treasurer, Dwight Bonner; Publicity Chair, Norm Millen and Program Chair, Audrey Millen.

Lillie Baker, secretary, said the minutes were online.   Then Dwight Bonner, treasurer, gave the financial report stating there was $3,285.60 in the bank The large balance was due to the class fees paid by 17 new students and some late plant sales money that came in.   He also stated that a large check would be written for the text books for the new students. Sandy Shaw informed the group that 17 students had paid and have been placed in the spring training class for Master Gardeners.   The recruiting would continue until the February 1.   Timi DeBusk suggested this group try to sign up people at the Lawn and Garden show on March 11 if the 20 students didn’t materialize before then.

Sandy read the spring class agenda with dates, topic and presenters as it stands today.   The schedule is not finalized but it is planned to be finalized soon.   She informed the group that her guest house would be used for accommodations for presenters who needed accommodations.   She asked for all the members to consider a class or two to host.   She said there would be a sign up sheet at he February 15th meeting for people to sign up.   The schedule of classes and presenters will be completed and people can pick a topic/presenter to host that interest them.

Timi DeBusk asked if there were enough projects available for all the new students to earn their 50 community volunteer hours.   It was explained that there were many projects available and getting the hours would be easy.   Some of the projects include the jail, the library, and the pocket park.   The pocket park being created beside the museum is ready to receive the trees that are to be planted.   The winding sidewalk and water are in place.   The park will be an ongoing project for several years.

Then Sandy directed the attention of the group to the Lawn and Garden Show on March 11 in Llano.   The show will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   It will be an educational event with vendors present.   Sandy informed the group she and Julia Woodall had send out the invitations to venders and had received three replies.   There are still some extra invitations to vendors and the members were asked to take one if they knew someone who might like to have a booth.   Timi DeBusk was the only member that took an invitation.

Food at the event was discussed next.   After Sandy Shaw told the group that finding someone to do the food was very difficult, Timi DeBusk suggested the LMG provide the food and use that as a fundraiser instead of competing with the nurseries by selling herbs.   She also said it would be more profitable since the food could be donated and the herbs had to be bought.   It was decided to think about that idea.

Sandy Shaw informed the assembled that the Forest Service would have trees available and the LMG would order them to arrive in time to be given away at the Lawn and Garden Show.   It was felt by the members that would be good public relations and create good will.

Lillie Baker reminded the 2005 that January was the month to pay membership dues.   The class of 2006 has until March to pay the $25.00 dues.

After the business portion of the meeting was complete, the social aspect resumed by having a white elephant plant swap.   Each member brought a plant, a plant clipping or seeds to swap.   Everyone drew a number and in order got to pick a plant from the table.   However, the person could take a plant from a person who had already chosen a plant.

After much laughing, swapping and selecting of plants, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by;

Lillie Baker, Secretary
