Monthly Meeting Minutes

Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, February 15; 5:30 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
Norm Millen, presenter
The Llano Master Gardeners held their regular monthly meeting Thursday, February 15 with a packed room. While members gathered, they enjoyed Valentine cookies, candies and red drink provided by Nancy Vollmar and Elaine McCall. Members, students in the 2007 class and people who had read the article in the paper about building an inexpensive, practical greenhouse were in attendance. Sandy Shaw, president, introduced the presenter Norm Millen immediately after welcoming all the members and guests.
Norm Millen is a member of the Llano Master Gardeners group. He gave a very detailed and informative power point presentation of building an inexpensive practical greenhouse from PVC pipes, plastic sheeting and 2x4 boards. He answered many questions during his presentation for the audience who were drawing diagrams and writing notes. After the presentation, some of the guests left while others stayed.
The business meeting followed the presentation. Lillie Baker said the minutes were posted online then Dwight Bonner gave the treasurers report. He reported with the 2007 dues and the fees for the spring class the account had $3633.95. However he reminded the members that the books for the 2007 class had not been bought nor the nametags. The question of the amount of dues was brought up. It was felt by some members that $25.00 per year membership was too expensive when compared to other organizations. It was decided that this year the dues would remain $25.00, but the by-laws should be revisited after the new class graduates and a new amount could be discussed and adopted.
Sandy Shaw stated the Pocket Park was ready for the planting of the big tree. The choice of tree had changed since a large live oak was found at a price lower than the first choice. One of the negatives to planting a live oak was its susceptibility to oak wilt but that was overruled by the price and that live oaks are native to this area. She said Tuesday, February 20, all the master gardeners should come to the pocket park for a newspaper picture and tree planting. Sandy Shaw passed around four pictures of the Pocket Park as it looks currently.
The discussion then focused on the upcoming Lawn and Garden Show. Lillie Baker was asked to contact Vera Honig about using the American Legion Hall Friday, March 9, to set up for the show as well as use of the letters and sign by the highway. It would take about 1 ½ hours to set up. Audrey Millen reported Christy’s bakery would provide the food during the show. Discussion continued on the fact the Master Gardeners were selling herbs in competition to the vendors. It was suggested the LMG sell something other than plants. Several merchants have donated door prizes and several new vendors have agreed to participate. Sandy Shaw had a sign up sheet on the sign-in table and she asked each member to state the time they wished to work. Due to the fact the next monthly meeting is after the Lawn and Garden show, the president said a meeting would be called before the Lawn and Garden show to discuss the last minute details of the show.
The next item of business was the spring training class that begins on March 14th. A schedule was passed out and everyone was asked to sign which class they wished to host. To host a meeting meant to introduce the speaker(s) and provide the refreshments. Sandy Shaw reiterated again the refreshments would be light such as a coffee bread, fruit, and coffee cake. The LMG organization would provide the coffee and water. The students could bring anything else they wanted to drink or eat. There are 23 paid members in the 2007 spring training class and two more have asked to join, but do not have their money turned in. When asked when the “drop dead” deadline for registering for the class was, Sandy Shaw said she was going to order two extra books, just in case someone still wanted to be part of the class.
The discussion moved to community projects for the new gradutates to get their community hours for certification. Sandy Shaw told the assembled there are plenty of projects including the library and the history museum. She told the new students they could start working on their community hours at any time.
Sandy Shaw also reminded the group that about 10 volunteers were needed on March 23rd from 9-2 oclock to help Todd Swift at the Ag Day program at the school. Those volunteering would get community volunteer hours.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
