Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, April 19, 2007; 6:00 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
Barbara Wright, presenter
The April meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners was held Thursday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the County Extension Office. Before the meeting, the members browsed the flower pots that were for sale by the presenter, enjoyed snacks of left over desserts from the class the day before or visited with each other.
Sandy Shaw called the meeting to order and introduced the presenter, Barbara Wright, who has a tree nursery in Briggs and specializes in native plants. She gave a power point presentation on Wild Scaping. She pointed out the four elements that go into wildscaping which are food, water, shelter and space. Then she described each component in detail while showing pictures of the concepts. After her presentation she answered some of the questions posed by the members. She had three plants she donated to the organization to be bid to the highest silent bidder and the money would go to the organization. Eva Whipple was the highest bidder. Barbara sold some of her plants to the members at a very reasonable price.
Sandy Shaw, president, then opened the business meeting by having the secretary, Lillie Baker, give a report on the minutes. Treasurer Dwight Bonner gave the treasury report stating there was $4,694.as the opening balance. In the last cycle $783.80 was brought in mainly from proceeds from the Lawn and Garden show. However, expenses totaled $1,739.16 mainly for text books for the new class and other expenses connected with the class. The closing balance was $3,738.75.
Sandy informed the group that Wednesday, April 25, after the class, those that wished could bring their shovels and help plant two mountain laurels (paid for by the city) at the Pocket Park. After planting the mountain laurels, students could begin working on the flowerbed at the History Museum.
Sandy also informed the group that the Llano Library expects the Master Gardeners to work on the flowerbeds around the library in exchange for free use of the library as a classroom. Timi DeBusk said she would donate the plants for the library after a plan was developed.
Todd Swift informed the group that County Judge Wayne Brascom has asked if the Master Gardeners would be interested in developing a plan for the flowerbeds at the Courthouse annex (old library) and for the monuments that look like tombstones on the courthouse square. After the plans are developed, they need to be presented to the judge for approval.
To clear up some misunderstandings about what qualified as community service volunteer credit, Todd Swift read the policy from A&M University. There were four points to the policy:
1. Project had to educational in nature and involve horticulture in some way.
2. Project must be identified as a Master Gardeners project.
3. Must have advance approval by the county agent.
4. Must not be the labor pool for an entity.
Sandy Shaw told the group that volunteer credit could be earned by redesigning the purple handouts and the class application form.
Sandy Shaw asked the assembled how they felt about refreshments. Julia Woodall made a motion to not have refreshments at the meetings and IdaNell Schuessler seconded the motion. The group voted not to have refreshments.
The time of the meeting was then discussed. Because of some members work schedule, they were unable to be at the meeting at 5:30 so the group decided to have the presentation begin at 5:45 and the meeting start at 5:30.
On May 2, Elaine McCall was signed up to bring refreshments to the class. Sandy asked someone to volunteer to help her. Lillie Baker volunteered. Then Sandy Shaw stated the location of the May 2 class would not be in the library but at a location still to be decided. Several suggestions were made such as Badu Park, Robinson Park, and the extension office.
Sandy Shaw asked the assembled if they would like to take a trip to San Antonio to the Antique Rose Emporium and Malcolm Beck’s garden. The group was excited about the prospect. It was decided to go on a Tuesday leaving Llano at 8:00 a.m. and to carpool. The date was not selected.
The Master Gardeners t-shirts were the last item on the agenda. There was a brief discussion about color of the t-shirt. Many suggestions were made but no decision was made.
The meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
