Monthly Meeting Minutes

July 2007

Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
July 19, 2007 5:30 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office

Sandy Shaw, president, called the meeting to order by announcing the presenter, Timi DeBusk, was late so the group would proceed to the open discussion of successes and problems this summer with personal vegetable gardens.

Audrey and Norm Millen brought to share some flat squash, crookneck squash and tomatoes.   They shared a problem they were having with some of the tomatoes becoming hard with yellow lines running from stem to opposite end.   Some suggestions were made but then others countered the suggestions with other ideas. There was also a discussion on how to prepare the flat white squash.   Patty Felts brought cucumbers and some canned cucumbers.   Eva Whipple brought two sacks filled with a variety of peaches, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes and squash she had grown.   Sandy Shaw had a box of freshly picked tomatoes.   The question was raised would there be enough produce to sell at the Farmers’ Market, but most members felt their gardens were coming to an end and would be preparing for the fall garden soon.

When Timi DeBusk failed to show, the meeting progressed to the minutes.

Lillie Baker, secretary, stated the minutes were on the Llano County Extension website up until Todd Swift left as county agent.   She asked Lisa Miller if it was possible to post the minutes on the Llano Master Gardener website that Lisa had created.   Lisa stated it was possible.   Dwight Bonner, treasurer, was not present but he had left a financial report with Sandy Shaw.   Then Sandy Shaw asked about the newsletter, The Cultivator.   Again Lisa Miller was asked if it could be posted on the LMG website since Llano no longer had a county agent.   Lisa agreed.   The next newsletter will be published the first of September.

Some dates of upcoming activities were given.   On July 24 there will be training for Junior Master Gardener, August 30 at 12:00 noon at the Llano Library a “Lunch and Learn” on Rainwater Catchment will take place and October 30 with the date of the Heritage Days event in Llano at which the LMGers will have a booth selling herbs and giving plant advice.   Sandy Shaw reminded the group to give dates of upcoming events to Lisa Miller to post on the website.

The meeting turned to the workshop on oak wilt in McCulloch County on June 19th conducted by the Brady Master Gardeners and the Forest Service.   Eight members attended and all reported that it was the most informative meeting on oak wilt they had attended.   They found the handouts outstanding, and the hands-on experience was invaluable.

The next item of business was to discuss projects and community hours for the interns.   Barbara Spain made a presentation showing two drawings she had made of the flowerbed at the Llano Library.   She had pictures of the area, also.   Susan Chadwick and Martha Rowlett gave a presentation on their project at the Habitat House in Mason.   They are training the homeowner on care and maintenance of the yard as well as planting low water consumption and low maintenance plants.   There was some discussion of the courtyard at the hospital.   Doris Ellis felt their services were not needed at the hospital.   Many commented on the how nice the Culture Club looked.   The Pocket Park, a.k.a. Pioneer Park is being worked on by Inell and Dave Franks, John Collins, Roy Petty and Sandy Shaw.   Dave and John gave reports of the progress.   Lisa Miller has created a website for the Llano Master Gardeners and told the group about it.

The discussion moved back to Heritage Day, October 30, in Llano.   There will be a popup tent available. Sandy Shaw asked the group to begin thinking about who wanted to work, who wanted to chair the event, who wanted to be responsible for ordering and picking up the herbs.   It was also suggested to have a Junior Master Gardener booth next to the Llano Master Gardeners’ booth and they sell plants donated by the LMG.

A question about t-shirts was asked.   Joann Coston said she would chair the project of locating a vendor, selecting the color and ordering the t-shirts.

The meeting adjourned at 6:55 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by;

Lillie Baker, Secretary
