Dr. Ray Buchanan, presenter
The September monthly meeting was called to order by Sandy Shaw, after the members had gathered and enjoyed the cake and drink provided by Norm and Audrey Millen. She introduced the speaker, Dr. Ray Buchanan.
Dr. Buchanan gave an informative and thought provoking presentation of the history of agriculture from 8000 B.C to the present time. He stated there were two basic agriculture revolutions in our history; the first when the people of the land realized they could cultivate seed and produce their own food. This changed the basic habit of being foragers. People were able to stay in one place and produce, even produce enough to create markets where food could be bartered for other goods and services. The second revolution came after World War II when synthetic fertilizers were used. This allowed for large, commercial farms and broke from the family farm and dependency on animals. It also created artificial additives to be part of the food supply.
After the presentation, the business section of the meeting proceeded. The group was reminded the minutes could be read online on the Llano Master Gardener website. The treasurer, Dwight Bonner, was not present due to a broken ankle from being thrown from his horse, so Sandy Shaw reported the funds were dwindling.
The newly certified members were presented their name badges. They were John Collins (absent), Roy Petty, Dave and Inell Franks and Lisa Miller (absent). Everyone was proud of their achievement.
Heritage Day, October 20, the Master Gardeners will have a booth on the courthouse lawn and sell native plants in 4 inch pots. There will also be a sign up sheet for the spring 2008 training class. Sandy Shaw asked for a volunteer to be in charge of the booth. Sandy Shaw and Doris Ellis would pick up the plants from the nursery and get them to the courthouse. The new pop-up tent will be available for use that day. There was a sign up sheet for workers on a table in the room and Sandy asked members who wanted to work to please sign up what they would like to do and/or time to work the booth. The booth will be set up between 8:00-9:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m.
The next item on the agenda was a report on the ongoing projects. The Pioneer Park is progressing very nicely. There were lots of compliments on the way it looked. Sandy invited anyone who wished to attend to be at the Berry Street Bakery at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25 for a planning meeting. On Friday, September 21, there would be a work session at the Llano County Library Garden. Anyone who wanted hours or wanted to help was asked to bring their garden tools and work beginning at 9:00 a.m.. Julie Woodard, Patti Felts and JoAnn Coston are working on the Historical Museum. Lisa Miller is doing a fantastic job on the website. Patti Felts reported the Red Top jail was going slowly at this time due some structural evaluations. Patty Kuyendall reported the Junior Master Gardeners needed knee high socks and empty pop cans to be saved for a project they would be doing with the students at the school.
Sandy Shaw reported the nominating committee for the new officers consist of JoAnn Coston, Norm Millen and Sandy Shaw. She said anyone who wished to serve either as an officer or on the committee should contact one of the members of the committee. She hoped some one from each year’s class would volunteer. Most of the officers have served their two years. The treasurer, program director and publicist are the only members who can serve another year.
Sandy Shaw asked for a chair for the Lawn and Garden Show. She stated the files from past shows were complete and would make the task easier. The Lawn and Garden Show will be in March but the date has not been set.
Sandy Shaw asked how the group felt about having a spring of 2008 class. The concern was if there were enough people in the county interested in attending. It was decided to see what kind of response was demonstrated at the booth during Heritage Day.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by;
Lillie Baker, Secretary
