Regular Monthly Meeting of Llano Master Gardeners
Thursday, October 18, 2007; 5:30 p.m.
Llano County Extension Office
John Kuykendall, presenter

The regular monthly meeting of the Llano Master Gardeners was held Thursday, October 18.   JoAnn Coston provided banana bread and raspberry tea and the Franks provided chocolate chip cookies for the members to munch on while waiting for everyone to arrive.   Sandy Shaw, president, called the meeting to order and introduced John Kuykendall, retired county agent, who spoke on the subject of pecans.

John Kuykendall gave a very informative presentation about the history of pecans, the locations across the United States where pecans are grown, and different varieties of pecans.   He talked about how the different varieties were crossed.   He listed the seven best pecan varieties for this area: Choctaw, Wichita, Cheyenne, Desirable, Pawnee, Hopi, and Sioux.   He ended his presentation with a question and answer session.   Everyone was very impressed with his knowledge of pecans.

After Mr. Kuykendall’s presentation, Sandy Shaw conducted the business meeting.   Lillie Baker reported the minutes could be read on the website.   Dwight Bonner, treasurer, reported there was a closing balance of $1,605.31 in bank.   He also stated the LMG was a non-profit organization and should not have a high bank balance.

JoAnn Coston and Candace Hauser received their pins and certificates for completing their requirements to become a Master Gardener.   Lisa Miller and Patty Kuykendall received their pins since they were not present when they were earned.   Many of the members are very close to completion of their requirements.

As old business, the progress in the projects was reported.   The website is developing very well and the Junior Master Gardeners are active with the students at Llano Elementary.   Also Dwight Bonner, treasurer, reported he was checking on the tax number requirements.

Sandy Shaw stated the date of the Llano Lawn and Garden Show had been set by the board for March 8, 2008.   Norm and Audrey Millen have volunteered to co-chair the event.   She also informed the group, the board had set the date for the training class for March 12, 2008.

Sandy also asked the assembled to sign up to work the booth at Heritage Day, Saturday 20 on the court house lawn.   The LMG would sell 4 inch pots of herbs, lettuce and a few natives as well as the LCRA book on Native and Adaptive Plants.   A sign up sheet for next year's Master Gardener training would be available to collect names of possible students.

Sandy stated the next meeting would be November 15 at the Extension Office, but the December meeting would be moved up one week to December 13 at Sandy’s house.   It would be a meeting/party/dinner.

Sandy told the group she had pulled up the plants at the library because they were doing poorly due to being in the shade.   She also informed the assembled that blue plumbago would be planted at the library; Monday at 9:00 a.m. and everyone who wanted to help should come and help plant them.

The members were told the board had reduced the annual dues to $15 per single person and $25.00 per couple.   Everyone seemed to agree that was fair.

The last item on the agenda was the slate of proposed officers for next year.   The slate included: President-Norm Millen; Vice President, Audrey Millen; Secretary, Roy Petty; Treasurer, Dwight Bonner and Publicity Chair, Dave Franks.   Sandy Shaw would serve as Project Coordinator.   Timi DeBusk and Eva Whipple agreed to co-chair location of presenters.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by;

Lillie Baker, Secretary
